Breaking Barriers: Why Accessibility matters for everyone [EN]

Accessibility is often viewed as a legal obligation, especially with the introduction of the European Accessibility Act (EAA), which has sent many website owners scrambling to ensure compliance, often driven by the fear of fines. But accessibility is far more than a legal requirement, or a box on some checklist. In this talk, we’ll explore how (and most importantly, why) Joomla site owners, developers, and designers can go beyond compliance and embrace accessibility as a fundamental principle of inclusive design.

We’ll look beyond compliance to explore why accessibility should be a core value in every Joomla project. We’ll discuss the real-world barriers users encounter when navigating the web, how Joomla extensions and templates can either help or hinder your accessibility efforts and why WCAG conformance alone isn’t enough. We’ll talk about how we’re all just “temporarily abled” and how embracing accessibility can elevate your Joomla site to serve all users effectively.

Main takeaways or acquired knowledge/skills

  • Learn about all the different barriers a user may encounter, and why (even when you’re not “disabled” in a legal sense) you (yes, you!) are still just “temporarily abled”, anyway.
  • Learn about WCAG and ATAG (its less-widely-known cousin), how they affect your Joomla project, but also why they’re not everything
  • Learn about which tools, extensions and templates can either help (or even actively hinder) your accessibility efforts
